Speech-Language Therapy: Preparing for an Evaluation

If you or a loved one are having difficulty with speech, language, or swallowing, you may have considered seeking the services of a speech-language pathologist.

Jayne Latz, Speech-Language Therapy: Preparing for an Evaluation

Arranging a speech-language evaluation is a critical first step on the road to improved communication, and while the process may seem overwhelming, it can be made much easier with a little bit of advanced preparation.

Here are a few steps you can take to make sure your initial appointment with a speech-language pathologist goes as smoothly as possible:

      • Take some time to consider the history of the communication issue. When did you first notice it? What were some of the early signs that led you to believe there may be a problem? Think of a few specific examples of times that the problem has occurred and how you would best describe them.
      • If the evaluation is for the speech or language of a young child, jot down some examples of their typical speech patterns or behaviors. For example, you may want to record approximately how many words they can say and understand, as well as other forms of communication and interaction (Do they wave “bye-bye”? Do they point to desired objects?).
      • Make a written list of any questions you have; people often feel overwhelmed at an evaluation and important questions may slip your mind in the moment. If you have a written list of questions, you are much more likely to get the information you need.
      • Bring a pad and pen or pencil and jot down any important information given to you by the speech therapist. You’ll be encountering a lot of new information, and it helps to have a written record of the most important points that you can review after the fact.

Last but not least, the most important part of a speech-language pathology evaluation is making the appointment!
